'Navy'

Night hikes and night rides are a summertime pleasure, especially on those days when it’s too hot to cycle or log miles. I often set out after midnight with starlight as my guide, following a route through the public rose garden on the way out of the city. With darkness enveloping everything other than what is illuminated by the moon, there is a serene intimacy, a sense that this garden is only mine, and these roses are just for me.

‘Navy’ is the flipside of the colorful abstract paintings in the ‘Summer Detours’ collection. While the rest of the series is focused on colours brought to life in bright sunshine, ‘Navy’ captures the charm and magic of a summer night. Instead of a wide-open view of a clear blue sky, attention is drawn to a narrow beam of light with faint, moonlit shapes in the background.
