'Fleury' Is Blooming!

'Fleury' Is Blooming!

A flurry of new paintings has blossomed. Spring is calling!

Growing from all things floral that I fell in love with last year, this spring collection is marked by lighter, brighter colours and a continued exploration of organic arrangements and curious shapes.

Loosely wandering brushstrokes were refined, defined, and arranged over time, shaping each imagined leaf, each curving stem into place. These paintings are playful gatherings of petals and pops as seen through the lens of my imagination.

Each colourful, mildly abstract bunch celebrates the home-grown, hand-picked, perfectly imperfect garden posy. My intention was to paint each small detail with great joy and to keep the spirit of spring alive in my studio as I worked. A consistent throughout this group is the appearance of a small, round vase, something that has been on my dresser since I was a child, an Easter gift from my mum, my beloved, consummate gardener. Its presence made working on this collection feel more intimate and personal.

Many happy memories floated into the studio while I painted, lovely feelings that I’m sure are infused in each piece, somehow, some way.

I wanted these paintings to speak to both heart and mind in a straightforward, timeless and uplifting way. There’s a universal appeal and understanding of the floral motif in art, and of all that flowers represent, ideas and feelings I feel intensely drawn to right now and feel compelled to share through my work. We live in a complicated and often difficult world where the healing beauty of nature and the joyous offerings from the garden, are felt and needed as deeply as ever. It was the promise of spring and the energy of her colours that pulled me through winter and fueled my imagination for this collection.

‘Fleury’ is a flower-forward series filled with optimism, imagination and vibrant spring colours. Layers and layers of time and thought (and paint!) went into each piece and I settled into a process that was both spontaneous and intentional – refining and defining shapes and composition as I worked to pull the initial flurry of idea and energy into charming, expressive and utterly imaginative bunches.
