For much of my life, I lived in a house at the top of a hill, and that hill was the setting for many, many happy memories. It had so much more potential for adventure than a flat lawn. It was a mountain to climb, a runway for jumps, a toboggan run in winter, a waterslide in the summer, a scene of races and play and injury year-round. To stand at the top and dream up a new and dangerous way to get down was to test the limits of my imagination and my parents' ability to tend to the inevitable wounds. We felt invincible, unbreakable, full of life, bursting with energy. Many an hour was spent cart-wheeling and somersaulting and tumbling down—limbs flying, heads bumping, wheels spinning—and laughing through it all.
I wanted the spirit of this collection, and this central painting in particular, to look and feel like those somersaulting days—a freewheeling, slip-sliding, spirited tumble with colour. Straight lines giving way to graceful curves and playful loops. A playful meander into the carefree exploration of joy. Colour for colour’s sake.
'Tumbled' is also a delightful little art card because it's such a fun image, a lovely way to share a smile and a cheerful note with someone special.
