Night rides and night hikes are a summertime pleasure. When days are too hot to pedal or log miles, I go out after dark with starlight leading the way. My route through the public rose garden is a favourite. There's a peaceful intimacy, a feeling this garden is just mine, these roses just for me when the darkness otherwise hides all but what's caught in the moonbeams.
Capturing the romantic allure of a hot summer night, ‘Navy’ is the flipside of the other colorful abstract paintings in this series. While the rest of the collection showcases colours brought to life in bright sunshine with expansive compositions, 'Navy' is focused and illuminates with a slender beam of light and moonlit shapes in the background.
Working with slightly larger canvases gave me room to develop movement and intrigue in the background. With 'Navy' I dove headfirst into the idea of a summer scene after dark, lost in the quiet solitude of the hours beyond midnight where subtle silhouettes suggest the contours of a garden without revealing any secrets.
